Summary: Biographical/Historical Note: Moses Liddell, born 1785, was a prominent planter of Elmsley Plantation, Woodville, Mississippi. In the mid 1840s he sold Elmsley and relocated nearer to his son, St. John Richardson Liddell of Llanada Plantation, Catahoula Parish, La. St. John, also a prominent planter, served as brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He resumed his plantation work at Llanada at the end of the war, and was fatally shot in a duel by Charles Jones on Feb. 14, 1870 after a longstanding feud. </p><p>Description taken from the Library's finding aid (please note that the items in the collection are not organised in this order). Note: best images possible. 14 items:</p><p>David Holmes, Mississippi Territory governor, appoints Moses Liddell justice of the peace and notary public. </p><p>6 slave sales by Richard Graves, at Woodville, Jan. 28, 1814; May 17, 1815; Aug. 26, 1816; Jan. 8, 1818; Sept. 8, 1818; Nov. 8, 1818.</p><p>6 miscellaneous items including cancelled promissory note, receipts, and land survey, pertaining to property purchased from Ezekiel N. Forman, Wilkinson County. Mar. 20 and Oct. 15, 1815; Feb. 9, Apr. 3 and 20, 1816; and Mar. 20, 1818.
